Starting a Major Giving Program

Major Giving Programs of all sizes are one of the best investments for any nonprofit today. They are notably the most difficult to begin but conversely create more giving and longer lasting giving than any other type of fundraising. A "Major Gift" is relative as well, it can be $5,000 or $50,000 depending on the budget and size of your nonprofit.

I am expert in development starter Major Giving programs for small and medium sized nonprofits. I have also done assessments of existing Major Giving programs for larger nonprofits and institutions.

The key to growing a powerful major giving program are the following factors:
  • Time
  • Prospect Research
  • Marketing and Messaging
  • Innovative Cultivation
  • Trained and Motivated Staff
  • Engaged and Informed Board

In my consulting I work with your organization on these key factors. I also embed diversity into this work so the outcome is a diverse Major Donor base of donors that looks like your community or constituency.  I work with organizations that have limited capacity and staffing to do this work as a norm.

I have three types of services I provide in Major Giving:

Research and Plan- I can identify new Major Donors bases, created a detailed prospect research list and design a plan you can implement to engage those prospects. Create that giving. This usually takes 6 months depending on the organization. This includes all training required for your staff.

Research, Plan and Outreach- I do everything in the previous service but I also act as an agent for your organization and reach out to the prospects myself.

Major Gifts Program Assessment- If you have an existing Major Gifts program. I can study it and give you a confidential assessment and recommendations. This is especially important to do before implementing a capital campaign. I assess staff competency, systems, Board support, messaging and marketing and more.
